KEYWORDS are the vehicles that carry the traffic, and the CORRECT KEYWORDS must be embedded into the foundation and construction of any successful website. This process is called search engine optimisation (SEO).

Most web designers STATE that  they DO optimise websites around keywords,
BUT 99% of the time they select the WRONG keywords and the 'On-Site Optimisation' is usually poor.

This incorrect selection of the keywords for a website, is the ONE FATAL MISTAKE (which usually goes totally unnoticed), that is the main reason why most websites FAIL.

The site theme is on equestrian products and the website designer does a quick look up using the FREE Google Keywords Tool - https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal - They type in equestrian equipment and receive a result like this ...

Looking through the list the webmaster decides to go for the keywords that have the most monthly searches like:

horse equipment, equestrian goods, equestrian saddle etc...

"Horse equipment" has 368,000 monthly searches whereas "equestrian saddle" only has 110,000. So most business owners would probably choose to use the keyword with the most searches - "horse equipment".

What the research results do not show you, is the data on the "competition" and the "buyer intent". If we now use bespoke keyword software that allows us to run a deep analysis on the "competitiveness" of the keywords, as well as the "buyer intent", then we see the following results ...

"horse equipment" has 214,000 competing pages.
"equestrian saddle" has 19,000 competing pages.

So from this data,  you can quickly see that "equestrian saddle" is going to be the best keyword to target initially, as it is competing against far fewer other web pages. It will therefore have a MUCH BETTER CHANCE of achieving a high ranking in the search engines, due to this lack of competition.

The final factor to consider now, is that if you wanted to target the keyword "equestrian saddle", you would need to do a more in depth competition analysis to find out the average number of BACK LINKS that the TOP 10 SITES listed in Google search have.

Again we use specialist software to find this data. Having run this keyword through the software I can tell you that in order to achieve a FIRST PAGE listing you would need to have approx. 300 Back Links, which as an SEO and Link Building company, we could easily generate for you in under a few months and would give you First Page Google Rankings.

OTHER FACTORS YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT ...

Of course, once you have the traffic, there are other important factors that then come into play, like how best to CONVERT THAT TRAFFIC into enquiries or sales, through correct layout, copy and design, which is an art on it's own. We do not have time to cover that topic here.

So, the secret of a successful website is therefore to ensure that:

  • The Keyword Foundations are correctly laid
  • A consistent Link Building programme is set in motion, that dovetails with those foundation keywords

Do these 2 CORRECTLY, and you are almost GUARANTEED a successful and profitable website.

In most cases, a first page ranking, for a popular keyword, will easily pay for itself time and time again, even if you just get ONE customer you would otherwise not have found. It will provide a sound return on your investment.
